The Firelands Chapter DAR, organized February 2, 2013, takes its name from the 500,000 acre Firelands (also known as Sufferers’ Lands) that were set aside by the Connecticut legislature for the residents of eight different Connecticut towns who lost their homes in 1779 and 1781 due to fires set by British forces.
Our chapter city of Vermilion, Ohio, located on the southern shore of Lake Erie, is one of thirty towns, cities and villages founded after the Firelands were established in 1792. Vermilion is rich in nautical history as well as American pride, and we are thrilled to call it home.
